✿ What is the Sakuyahime Project?

–A project to build a gender-equal human resource database in Shizuoka–

The Sakuyahime Project aims to empower Shizuoka women and develop female leaders for the next age. It is a project launched in 2010 by the Shizuoka Prefectural Government Office of Gender Equality

In part one of the Sakuyahime Project, spanning from August 2010 to the end of March, 2011, we interviewed 160 women deeply connected to Shizuoka prefecture through their activities in a variety of fields. We featured their thoughts regarding work, child-rearing and family life on our public website.

In part two of the Sakuyahime Project, launched in May, 2011, we named those who are contributing to the realization of a gender-equal society, “Sakuya Individuals.” We introduce a total of 63 people, including men, of course, and others working with Shizuoka’s Office for the Declaration of Creating a Gender-equal Society.

Sakuyahime and Sakuya Individuals, in tribute to Mt. Fuji, comprise a total of 223 people (“223” can be phonetically read “fu-ji-san” in Japanese). On the Sakuyahime Project website, where you can learn more about the lives of these various men and women, there is also a Shizuoka gender-equal human resource database. It offers advice to all on how to follow one’s own path in life.

The name of this project derives from a well-known female god of Mt. Fuji, Konohana Sakuyahime. As the god of safe birth and child rearing, she has been popular among women since ancient times, she appears in a number of Japanese legends, and is embodied in Sengen shrines all across Japan, most notably Mt. Fuji’s Hongû Sengen Shrine.
